Italian Summer Iced Drinks: Five Simple Recipes to Cool Down in Style

Italian Summer Drinks

Iced Espresso Drinks for Summer

There’s something about espresso in the summer that feels a little different. It is still bold, rich, and energizing, but when served over ice, shaken until frothy, or mixed into a refreshing cocktail, it becomes lighter, smoother, and perfect for warm afternoons.

Whether you are looking for a quick iced coffee upgrade, a café-style drink at home, or a cocktail for a summer evening, espresso is one of the easiest ingredients to turn into something special. All you need is a good shot of espresso, plenty of ice, and a few simple ingredients.

Here are five iced espresso drinks to try this summer, including three refreshing coffee recipes and two espresso cocktails.

Iced Shakerato

A shakerato is one of the easiest and most refreshing ways to enjoy espresso in the summer. It’s smooth, foamy, sweet, and feels like something you would sip at a café in Italy or a trendy coffee shop in the city.

Ingredients:

  • 1 shot of espresso
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons sugar or simple syrup
  • Ice

How to make it:
Brew the espresso and add it to a cocktail shaker with sugar or syrup and plenty of ice. Shake hard like a bartender for 15 to 20 seconds, until the drink is chilled and super frothy. Strain into a glass and serve immediately.

Vero Tip: For an ultra smooth version, use simple syrup instead of granulated sugar. Hazelnut, mocha or caramel syrup is perfect for the Summer!

Iced Vanilla Espresso Latte

This is a creamy, summer drink that tastes like a café favorite without being too milk heavy. The vanilla softens the boldness of the espresso while keeping the flavor rich and balanced.

Ingredients:

  • 2 shots of espresso
  • 1 cup cold milk
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla syrup
  • Ice

How to make it:
Fill a glass with ice. Add vanilla syrup first, followed by cold milk, and finally layer your double shot of espresso on top. Stir gently and serve.

Tip: If you’re not feeling vanilla, there are plenty of other syrup flavors you could use. Try brown butter toffee, caramel apple, cookie butter or even marshmallow. You are the creator of your own latte…feel free to blend flavors too. Peanut butter praline. White chocolate macadamia nut. The combinations are endless.

Espresso Tonic

This is a very Italian mocktail: bright, fizzy, and shockingly refreshing. Espresso tonic is perfect for anyone who likes a drink that feels light on the palate but still has that bold espresso kick.

Ingredients:

  • 1 shot of espresso, cooled slightly
  • 4 to 6 ounces tonic water
  • Ice
  • Orange peel or lemon peel, optional but HIGHLY recommended

How to make it:
Fill a glass with ice and tonic water. Slowly pour the espresso over the top so it “floats” slightly. Garnish with citrus peel if desired.

Tip: “Floating” is a bartending technique used to layer a lighter liquid on top of a denser one. It adds flair but also keeps certain smells and flavors close to the drinker’s nose and it changes the taste of the drink the more you sip. Try pouring the float (the espresso) over the back of a spoon. This will help disperse the liquid rather than letting it sink.

Carajillo

The carajillo is a very trendy cocktail in 2026! Bold, smooth, and perfect for light boozing outside after dinner. It combines espresso with Licor 43 for a drink that is slightly sweet, aromatic, and incredibly easy to make.

I know what you’re thinking…what is Licor 43? It is a vanilla and citrus flavored liquor from Cartagena, Spain and goes VERY well with espresso and spritzes.

Ingredients:

  • 1 shot of espresso
  • 1 ½ ounces Licor 43
  • Ice

How to make it:
Fill a rocks glass with ice. Add Licor 43, then pour the espresso over the top. Stir gently before drinking to mix everything together.

Tip: For a frothier version, shake the espresso and Licor 43 with ice, then strain into a glass.

Espresso Martini Spritz

A summer evening classic. The espresso spritz is smooth and indulgent with the perfect balance of bitter coffee, maple sweetness, and fizzy energy.

Ingredients:

  • 1 shot espresso
  • 2oz coffee liqueur
  • 1.5oz vodka
  • 3oz prosecco
  • Club soda to top
  • Maple syrup to sweeten

How to make it:
Add espresso and maple syrup together (this prevents the syrup from seizing in the cold temperatures and turning to a thick goop). Then add vodka, coffee liqueur, prosecco, soda, ice and espresso to a large glass. Gently stir to combine.

Tip: If you want it a little stronger, skip the club soda and just use more prosecco or vodka. If you want it more mellow, you can skip or scale back the vodka and/or prosecco entirely.
